The market for HBO has changed since DISH last signed a carriage deal in 2015: HBO set the market price at $15 per month with its launch of the direct-to-consumer HBO Now service; and AT&T has announced plans to launch a new direct-to-consumer HBO service next year. Dish Network Corp. on Wednesday reported that it lost subscribers in the latest quarter as pressure from blackouts of HBO and Univision weighs on its base. Shares of the satellite-television provider fell 8% in response. DishNetwork will start losing subscribers as we approach April and HBO is not back. IMHO, part of this is just a PR play by DishNetwork. My prediction is that in the next 2-3 weeks, DishNetwork will announce that they have negotiated with the evil monopoly that is AT&T and fought a good fight but the end result is that HBO will cost $5-10 more a month than it use to.. Both DIRECTV and DISH Network offer movies a-la-carte and via discounted packages, so if there’s more than one network that catches your eye, consider bundling to save a few extra dollars per month. With the advent of competitors (NETFLIX, Hulu, etc), prices have gone down over the last few years and expect that trend to continue.
